This body of work, although not planned, traces the various solutions I discovered to assist my exit from the artistic 'trench' I had inhabited for a few years. At first sight, the different pieces seem to have little in common, but on closer inspection there are elements common to them all. The square format, drawing on wet paint to the surface below, using the centre as the starting point for the painting, drawing or paper construction.
There is a sense of human vulnerability at the centre of the work. My weaknesses at assessing the middle of a surface, drawing a straight line, making a decision about choosing a colour or shape. It is these qualities or creative tics that are present in pieces such as 'Phantom' and 'Spine'. They also show my developing interest in the idea of a book and how it works in the memory. I have a sketch book in my mind and I am creating a way to display the way a book contains a myriad of ideas, page after page and layer after layer. The ideas you cannot see are crucial to the finished painitng, just as much as those you can see when the work is complete. |
